Micropore vs Zinc Oxide Tape: Which Medical Tape Is Right for Sensitive Skin?

Medical tape looks like a commodity until you've had a client or resident react to the wrong one. Micropore and zinc oxide are the two workhorses, and they're not interchangeable.

Micropore tape

Micropore tape is a soft, breathable, low-tack option designed for sensitive or fragile skin — elderly residents, frequent dressing changes, or anyone prone to skin tears. It's gentler to remove but holds less firmly under movement or moisture.

Zinc oxide tape

Zinc oxide tape is a firmer, more rigid adhesive built for support and secure fixation — strapping, sports injuries, and dressings that need to stay put through activity. It holds better under stress but is more likely to irritate delicate or damaged skin, and is firmer to remove.

Which to stock

As a rule of thumb: reach for micropore when the skin itself is the concern (elderly care, paediatric use, fragile or previously damaged skin), and zinc oxide when secure fixation under movement is the priority. Many care homes and clinics stock both rather than compromising on either.
